Welcome to the Beloved Community! Founded in 2006, we are a Rochester-based multi-racial, interfaith, urban/suburban community inspired by the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who said: “Our goal is to create a beloved community and this will require a qualitative change in our souls as well as a quantitative change in our lives.”
In forums across the city, hundreds of people gave witness to the suffering and to the strength in our neighborhoods. From more than seven hundred comments, we discovered ten fundamental values that, if practiced across the region, would bring to life the promise of Isaiah 58 in the Bible: “Restoring streets in which to dwell.”
These values are comprehensive, universal, challenging to all parts of our population. They embrace hundreds of actions, large and small in our communities. We believe that the Beloved Community is resident among us, yeast sometimes hidden but always dynamic.
For us, the experience of the Beloved Community has been life-changing. We have seen the courage of people to be in relationship across cultural divides. We are better people for this work. This is an invitation to self-awareness, honesty and healing.
Our goal is to provide an over-arching understanding of the work of justice and peace all around us. Our partners in the National Coalition Building Institute give us practical tools to keep building the Beloved Community. We intend to be a resource for all so engaged, and a common home.
We invite you to this journey: the realization that all our works are for one purpose, that we are already a beloved community and are moving together to be stronger. This goal inspired Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, Walter Rauschenbusch, Martin Luther King, Jr., Helen Barrett Montgomery and many thousands.
Anyone who embraces these values is welcome here. You can share your stories. You can learn our history and make more of it. You will find resources here. Together, we will discover the power to make the world new again.
Rooted in love, The Coalition for the Beloved Community is a countywide movement to build a culture of peace, grounded in dignity and fed by hope. We are dedicated to personal and community transformation based on community standards borne out of the testimony of the people and out of our love for our community.
